De La Soul are a massively influential hip-hop group hailing from Amityville, New York. They are best known for their eclectic sampling and quirky, surreal lyrics and were one of the earliest alternative hip-hop acts.
The three band members - Kelvin Mercer, Vincent Mason and David Jude Jolicouer - formed the group in 1987 whilst still at high school. After catching the eye of producer Paul Huston (Prince Paul) they went on to make their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, which was a critical smash and has been described as a "hip-hop masterpiece." It even went on to be voted Album of the Year by NME Magazine, in spite of it not fitting into the magazine's usual guitar based music.
De La Soul have been hugely influential on other hip-hop artists including Mos Def, Camp Lo and Black Eyed Peas. More recently, the group won a Grammy for their collaboration with the Gorillaz on the single Feel Good Inc. With a huge back catalogue and universal appeal, we cannot wait to welcome the group to Abu Dhabi for the first ever Wakestock Abu Dhabi. We think that the crowd will love them!
